What: Mile High Run Club

Where: New York City

How: It’s about time someone took the genius idea of what spinning is to cyclists and applied it to runners and running! Treadmill workouts are infinitely less boring and more results driven when you’re being instructed by a professional on just how to move that belt!

At the first ever studio dedicated to running, owner Deborah Warner has class options ranging from 45 to 90-minutes, ending each with short strength sessions. Whether you’re a new or seasoned runner, this is sure to be a new adventure for the New Year!

How to DIY: Get a few friends together, hit the gym and grab some treadmills that are all next to each other. Then, over the next 30-90 minutes, challenge each other with faster paces, hills and recovery. The more you mix it up, the quicker the time with pass.

We guarantee you will run faster and farther with your own group indoor run!

What: Sproing Fitness

Where: Chicago

How: Have you ever felt like you’re running on a big squishy pillow? Well, at Sproing Fitness in Chicago, you kind of are. You’re also harnessed to a bungee-like cord for added resistance. Trust us, this is a very unique “running” experience and is almost worth a trip to Chicago for the fitness benefits.

The Sproing motto is “train soft,” and their treadmill hard decks have been replaced with soft mats. The cushioning this provides greatly reduces impact on your joints, which in turn, greatly reduces your injury risk. To run healthy though out 2016, we highly recommend trying a class where you can burn up to 750 calories in 45-minutes. Now that’s something to raise a glass to!

How to DIY: Admittedly this is harder to do on your own, unless you were really good this year, and Santa placed one under your tree. Barring any magical gifts, you can run on the beach, do a Bosu workout or a plyometric routine on soft mats. All of these options reduce impact and have you training the same running muscles in a very different way.

What: City Row

Where: New York City

How: Think of this as an interval strength training class with lots of rowing. And, not just any rowing but with a stunning view of the city on state-of-the-art water based rowing machines.

As you may know, rowing is especially beneficial to runners as it works the legs, core, back and arms. Rowing can help correct poor posture and build smaller, usually under developed muscles in the hip flexors while adding flexibility in the hamstrings and calves. What’s not to love?

How to DIY: You know that neglected rowing machine at your gym? Get on it! First, be sure to ask a trainer for proper form and technique, and then row away. For a little more burn, do intervals of treadmill running for every 10 minutes on the rower. We guarantee this change-up will make the workout fly by while making you a more efficient runner.

However you chose to celebrate one more year of fitness, be safe, be smart and be original.

Happy New Year!
