Gold’s Gym Trainer 720 Review

Editor's Rating: 6.2 /10

The Gold’s Gym Trainer 720 Treadmill is an entry-level, compact, and folding model offered by the globally renowned Gold’s Gym Fitness. It ‘s an easy machine to find in stores like Walmart.

A compact treadmill, this model is designed with a 20″ x 55″ running area and a folding design that uses the patented SpaceSaver technology. The drive system is equipped with a G-Force 2 motor, but the strength of the motor is not disclosed (not a good sign). As with other models by Gold’s Gym, the 720 features the AirStride Plus Cushioning system that adds support and cushioning to the deck (reducing impact on joints and providing a smoother ride).

There are 10 levels of resistance to choose from on this model and it reaches speeds of up to 10 mph. Speed and incline changes can be made using the QuickSelect keys on the console for fast and efficient shifts in the middle of a work out.

The minimalistic console includes a blue-tinted multi-window LED display that is not back-lit. To monitor your heart rate, PowerPulse heart rate monitors are built into the hand grips. There are 18 built-in workout programs to choose from, as well an smartphone compatible music port. For added convenience, the console includes two large cup holders and a CoolAire workout fan.

Gold’s Gym offers a lifetime warranty on the frame, 25 years coverage on the motor, and 1 year coverage on parts and labor.

What We Like:

  • Folding Design: The Gold’s Gym Trainer 720 is a folding machine, featuring a SpaceSaver design that allows the deck to fold up vertically. A convenient feature for anyone planning to workout in smaller spaces.
  • Price: Priced well under $1,000, this model is very budget-friendly. You do compromise some quality for the price tag though, so it’s more of a starter model for beginners.
  • Deck Cushioning: This model is designed with the AirStride (TM) Cushioning system that keeps the deck rigid and supportive to prevent injury and add comfort.
  • Warranty: Lifetime coverage on the frame ad 25 years on the motor isn’t bad considering the price point.

What We Don’t Like:

  • Display Screen: This display screen is small and difficult to read since it is very narrow. You get the basic workout readouts like calories burned, time, and distance. Sadly there’s not much else other than a race track display that shows your progress.
  • Overall Quality: This machine is made with cheap plastic parts and you can feel that lack of durability when working out. The drive system is also pretty weak and the deck does not feel very sturdy either. All of this is confirmed by the low weight capacity of just 300 pounds. This isn’t a machine built to last.
  • Running Area: The running area on this model is less than impressive. The average running deck is somewhere around 20″ wide and 60″ long, but this model is cramped at only 55 inches long. This will be an issue for taller people, sprint runners, or anyone who just wants some space while working out. For many, it’s also a safety concern.

Our Verdict:

As a starter treadmill, the Gold’s Gym Trainer 720 isn’t terrible, but it’s not great either. The console provides little more than the basic workout necessities,, but it’s the overall quality and build of the treadmill that keeps us from wholeheartedly recommending it. If you are a taller person or weigh more 185 pounds, you will feel cramped and slightly uncomfortable using this machine. The Gold’s Gym Trainer 720 might have a flashy and recognizable brand, but you would never actually see this machine in one of their gyms. This is a decent option if you want a disposable treadmill to use for a short period of time, but far from a machine that will keep up with you over the long haul. If you want a treadmill that won’t break the bank, look into more reliable models that are well under the $1000 price point. This isn’t a machine worth owning for any considerable amount of time. The price is low for a reason.
