How to Fix Common Treadmill Problems

We all know treadmills are a great addition to a home gym. They provide an effective and relatively safe cardiovascular workout. Like most workout machines, a treadmill may occasionally malfunction, especially if you use it frequently. Treadmills come in a wide range of sizes, shapes, and features – but there are several key problems that pop up on most types of treadmill machines. Timeliness is key. You can minimize damage and downtime when you act quickly. Learn how to fix a treadmill with these effective tips for common treadmill repair.

Why You Should Trust Our Advice

At TreadmillReviews.net, we bring you comprehensive reviews of treadmills so you can decide which one is right for you. Our staff thoroughly test all the treadmills we review. We install them, walk on them, run on them, and try out all of the features. We get to know each and every treadmill we review extremely well. Our reviewers log miles on the deck. We listen and record the sound of the motor, we test and measure the incline/decline, try out all aspects of the console and try the treadmill’s features.

Every treadmill we review undergoes the same rigorous process. That way we can compare and contrast them and give you an honest review of what we think. This includes inspecting the machine parts.

Our reviewers are treadmill and fitness experts. Brian, the author of this review, is a competitive bodybuilder for the last 11 years, and is a 7-time national qualifier in both men’s bodybuilding and classic physique within the NPC competitions. He has coached and been coached on cardiovascular training, HIIT, and nutrition, particularly as it pertains to weight loss for competitions. He is an expert at treadmills, has been on this treadmill, and has been exercising on treadmills since his days as a high school and college athlete. You can trust his opinion on all of the treadmills he reviews.

Erratic Speed

There may be a problem with your machine if the speed varies as you’re running. Begin by checking the owner’s manual for the recommended speed setting. Set the machine to the recommended setting, but do not get on. Observe the treadmill for several minutes to see if there’s hitching in the belt. This is often a sign that you need a new belt. If you’re new to this, read my review here on “How to Change a Treadmill Belt.” If the machine shuts down, there may be a problem with the motor, or the machine may have a faulty circuit. For everything you ever wanted to know about treadmill motors, you can read up on that topic here.

Treadmill belts should be tight enough that only about 3″ of tread can be lifted up. Photo by Brian Boyce

Slipping Belt

If you feel a slipping sensation when using your treadmill, it may be in need of minor treadmill repair. To fix treadmill problems associated with slippage, align and tighten the running belt. Belts can slip when there’s too much friction or if the belt is over-tightened. To check if the belt is too tight, lift it in the center. There should be a gap of approximately two to three inches. If not, the belt is likely too tight.

No Display

When problems occur with the console display, the solution is usually relatively simple. To fix treadmill console displays, check the length of the power cord and visible wires. Worn batteries or crimped cords will need to be replaced. Treadmill repairs associated with a magnetic pickup on the flywheel will include a thorough examination. The magnet may have fallen off and will need to be replaced. If the console develops static, the circuit breaker may need to be reset. Unplug the power cord for 60 seconds to fix this problem.

Dirt and Debris Treadmill Motor

Buildup of dirt and debris is a primary cause for a plethora of treadmill motor issues. Monthly vacuuming goes a long way in improving durability. Photo by: Jessica Jones / TreadmilReviews.net

Burning Smell

If you notice a burning smell from the treadmill, it could indicate something serious. Immediately turn off the treadmill and unplug the power cord from the wall. Common causes of a burning smell from a treadmill include friction between the deck and back or a short in the wiring, electronics, or motor. These problems could potentially cause a fire, making immediate treadmill repair essential. One of the biggest issues I see in consumer complaints about treadmills is their own failure to maintain them. Proper lubrication of your belt and deck, and the occasional vacuuming of your motor case will go a long way to preventing these problems.

Non-Working Motor

Fixing a non-working treadmill motor can be one of the more costly treadmill repairs an owner will run into. The motor may need to be replaced if powered at full speed, cannot be adjusted, and continues not to work or works poorly. Treadmills that power on at a full speed often experience problems with failed circuits, leading to safety issues. Professional attention may be required to repair or replace the circuit or motor.

Heated Belt

Too much friction on the running belt can cause it to heat up and not run properly. Treadmills require lubrication to limit the amount of friction between the platform and belt. When the friction increases to a certain point, the machine is automatically set to power off. This may be the cause for the machine to stop working suddenly. Try lubricating the belt. Ultimately, it may need to be replaced.

It’s common to run into some hangups when learning how to fix a treadmill. While the issues mentioned above are pretty common, the solution isn’t always easy. Treadmill parts may need to be completely replaced before the machine can be used again. It’s important to learn how to fix a treadmill the correct way to avoid injury to yourself and damage to the machine. Troubleshooting the treadmill can help determine the point of failure within the machine. This will also give you the opportunity to fix or replace the part yourself or with the help of a skilled repair technician.

Inspecting rollers from time to time is a good idea.

Proactive Maintenance

Preventative maintenance on your treadmill is essential to ensure its longevity and optimal performance. Firstly, regular cleaning is crucial; this includes wiping down the machine after each use to remove sweat and debris, and vacuuming around the belt and deck area to prevent accumulation of dust and fibers. The belt requires periodic lubrication to reduce friction and wear, following the manufacturer’s guidelines on the type and frequency of lubricant to be used. Additionally, it’s important to check and tighten any loose bolts or screws regularly, as these can become loose with vibration and movement during use. Ensuring the belt is properly aligned and tensioned is also vital for smooth operation and to prevent uneven wear. Lastly, keeping the treadmill in an environment with stable temperature and humidity levels can prevent electrical and mechanical parts from deteriorating prematurely.

How long will your Treadmill Last

The average lifespan of a treadmill typically ranges between 7 to 12 years. However, this can vary significantly based on several factors. Key among them are the quality and durability of the treadmill itself, the frequency and intensity of its use, and the consistency and thoroughness of maintenance and care. Higher-end models often last longer due to better construction and components, while budget-friendly models may have a shorter lifespan. Regular maintenance, such as cleaning, lubricating, and checking for wear and tear, can significantly extend a treadmill’s life. Additionally, how the treadmill is used — whether it’s for light walking or intense running — can also impact its longevity. Proper usage, in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidelines, plays a crucial role in maintaining its condition over time.

I have a Life Fitness Sport ST 35. It's older but has very low hours. We just started using it again for a couple months and I'm starting to smell a burning smell. I lubed under the belt, but the belt motor is still getting hot. I pulled the brushes out and they have little ridges in them but don't look too bad. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you

Hi Brendan. We are sorry to hear that you are having problems with your machine. Which make and model do you have? Most companies have a support line to speak with someone directly.

Did you find an answer to your question? I have the same problem. I'm 195 and I got an older treadmill from my step mom that was barely used, but it is 10 years old. Worked great twice, now the belt slips bit only when I'm not holding on. I barely hold on at all, not lightening the load much, but does fine til I let go. Tightening the belt did not help.

I have a Nordic Trak treadmill. I turn it on, it slows down and shuts off after about 30 seconds. Would this be the motor or something else?

Hi Maggie, yes it is likely this is the motor. In your manual you should have a section for troubleshooting your machine. This may also solve the problem you are facing.

Wondered if anyone had advice that could help. My treadmill shuts off (I think safety thing) when I press start. I had assumed it was the motor after testing so got another one. Same issue. If I unplugged the speed wire, it does not shut off. But also does not turn either as it relies on speed. So makes me think something to do with the speed cable or board (not sure it's the cable as I have tried with 2 on the motors). Don't really want to buy a board if it's not that as already spent money on a motor that I can't get back (bought off eBay).
    • Amanda B.May 13, 2019 at 11:06 am
Hi Brian, have you tried talking to customer service about the issues with this machine? Usually the manufacturer would be able to offer the correct steps to fix this. Please let us know how we can help you alleviate this problem.
  • ZippyMay 14, 2019 at 2:45 pm
I've bought a second hand treadmill But when I put it onto a running speed it starts to move up and down like your limping instead of running I really need some help I'm not sure what to do it on it
    • Amanda B.May 15, 2019 at 1:59 pm
Hi Zippy, it sounds like there may be an issue with the belt. If it is not in the correct position with the motor that could be what is making it uneven for you. We advise looking at the manual of the machine and if you do not have it perhaps getting a technician to come in a fix the belt. You may also be able to do this on your own if you find the manual for your machine so that you can put it together properly.

  • Eric NovakMay 16, 2019 at 10:06 amfrom Michigan
A neighbor gave us a treadmill for free and noted that the belt seemed to slip a bit when in use. I noticed the same thing so I used the belt adjustment screws to tighten the belt. This helps some, though it still seemed to be slipping a little especially early on. Once it warmed up it didn't seem to slip as much. While the belt seemed to be better I noticed that the speed was not consistent. If I set the speed for 3.5MPH, as you walked the speed would fluctuate between 3.5 - 4.2 MPH. Then yesterday I was walking on it for over 30 minutes when the treadmill completely shut down. The deck and motor were very hot and there was a smell of burning. The treadmill wouldn't restart. I tried it again this morning and the motor did start up again, but still having the same belt slipping/speed issues. Maybe I see why the neighbor gave it away for free :-). The treadmill isn't a very high-end model (Pro Form CrossWalk Advance 525) and may be fairly old. I'm not super handy so I feel like I may be better off to give this away to someone who'd be able to fix it or do you think this could be fixed rather easily?

Issue with Gold's Gym treadmill. When I switch on power the display lights up as it should do, but when I press "go" ( ie start the motor), the electricity gets tripped. Hello, I have a Bowflex BXT216 which is a few months old. It is a fold up, and when I engage the hydraulics to lower it, when it is about 18in off the ground it has a loud metal click sound, and continues to lower. This is not new, it has been present all along, but a friend pointed out that he thought it was too loud. I called Bowflex and the woman said that was normal but louder then she has heard it before. She sent me instructions to “clean out the hydraulic lift“. I don’t expect it to be silent, but is a loud metal click normal, from your experience? Is this something that should require more serious attention? Thank you

I purchased a secondhand gfit T-WLKY . It s a manual but I'm finding it very difficult to walk on it even though it's on its lowest setting . It seems as if the mat is rolling very tightly . There are two large roller wheels to roll it. Could it be that these need oil?
    • Avatar photoAmanda BJune 18, 2019 at 12:09 pm
Hi Theresa, your running belt may need some lubrication to get it running smoothly. You can use treadmill lubricant to ensure that your running belt doesn't get damaged. If this doesn't work, then I would contact the company directly to ensure the right steps are taken to solve the issue.

I have a Precor 9.27. I usually run, but I've walked a little lately and noticed that the center of the belt where my feet impact the most feels like it might be grooved underneath. I felt under my belt and the deck surface still feels quite smooth. It's a single sided deck that now has 8 years of regular running on it. Could it be time to replace the deck? Thank you.

I have a Proform 600i and the belt suddenly slipped like 4" to the left whilst using it! Immediately stopped it and tried to adjust via the adjustment screw and started it again but it was just over too far. The edge caught and partially flipped over. What caused this? Was working fine except needing the occasional adjustment. I have ordered a new belt but want to prevent this happening again. I probably put about 1500 miles on it at time of this issue.
    • Avatar photoAmanda BJuly 10, 2019 at 5:05 pm
Hi Cynthia, there are many factors that can cause the treadmill belt to slip. One of the most common is not enough lubrication. Sometimes the belt slips if there's too much friction between the belt and the running deck, so you can try lubricating the belt to stop the friction (but always check the manual first, so that you do this correctly!). Also, you can always contact ProForm support to get a better assessment of the problem specific to your treadmill.

We have a treadmill and it has been in our garage for 2-3 years and we got it out and everything works including the display and buttons but the belt will not run. Do you know what could be wrong ?
    • Avatar photoAmanda BJuly 16, 2019 at 11:45 am
Hi Bryce, it could be a number of different things causing your treadmill belt to not run. It might be that the belt is too tight causing too much tension for the motor to allow it to turn or it could be something wrong with the wiring. If you are able to find the manual, you may be able to get troubleshooting information through that or you can contact the manufacturer directly.

    • Avatar photoAmanda BSeptember 9, 2019 at 11:09 am
Hi Mhaida, sorry to hear that you're having issues with your treadmill. The belt not moving could be due to a few different factors, such as loose console wiring, the belt being off-center, or the belt being too tight. You can check your user manual to see if there are quick troubleshooting tips that you can follow, or contact the treadmill manufacturer's support team.

I've been using my treadmill for years. Last year we replaced the belt as it became worn with some holes in. Now after perfect use a few days ago, the motor seems to be running without any movement in the belt. I am not sure what the issue could be. The belt moves manually and the motor makes a noise however just does not function normally. Has my treadmill come to the of its life?
    • Avatar photoAmanda BOctober 21, 2019 at 5:01 pm
Hi P, it sounds like your treadmill may have a wiring issue. You can contact your treadmill's manufacturer to see if this is something that they can fix. However, sometimes getting parts fixed and replaced can be costly, and it would be better to just buy a new treadmill altogether.

My treadmill is a pro form. I am running 1 mile on it when I get to about a half mile at a constant 6 speed. The belt wants to shake and make a popping noise. Any suggestions on what to do or check?
    • Avatar photoAmanda BJanuary 14, 2020 at 2:58 pm
Hi Kylie, have you tried adjusting the belt? Sometimes a treadmill belt becomes too tight or misaligned causing it to malfunction. Check your user manual for troubleshooting tips, and if none of them work then you may have to contact ProForm directly.

Hello. I have a Nordictrack C990 treadmill and the belt stops moving once it gets to 4 mph. I can still hear the motor running however. Thanks!!
    • Avatar photoAmanda BJanuary 7, 2020 at 2:10 pm
Hi Brian, it may be something wrong with the tightness of the treadmill belt or the calibration. I would consult the user manual to see if there are any troubleshooting tips in there, and if not, then I would contact NordicTrack directly as they would be able to better assess the problem.

I have a ProForm Pro 2000 Treadmill. It has iFit on it. I have been using it in the manual mode for almost a 1 1/2 years. Today it will only work if I sign up for iFit. I don't want to sign up/pay for iFit. I only want to use the manual mode. I have tried unplugging the machine, but it won't reset. It won't go to any other screen. How can I use my treadmill in manual mode (or even get to the screen with the manual mode button on it)?
    • Avatar photoAmanda BJune 15, 2020 at 12:21 pm
Hi Margaret, it is different for every treadmill model. You can live chat with ProForm and they'll be able to give you step by step instructions on how to access manual mode.

HELP NEEDED: I have a Life Fitness T3 Treadmill that all of a sudden won't start, won't turn on.. no power. And the "reset" button has "sunk".. as in you cannot press it in to reset it or recalibrate it (reset button on the front/bottom next to the on/off switch and socket plug that plugs into the wall outlet). I have taken the "hood" off to the base of the treadmill and see a circuit board, motors, lots of wires and nothing looks disconnected... Any suggestions? And, it all else fails.. a recommendation of Repair Person who services the North Houston area. Many thanks!

  • DouglasAugust 15, 2020 at 4:15 pm
Treadmill will run normal then suddenly stop then run again. Belt lubed no change it feels like a controlled stop not the motors ability to move. Very frustrating having to hold on in case it stops again.
