Treadmill Belt Lubricants: Where to Get Them and What to Look For

Just like your car, a treadmill belt requires regular lubrication. It’s one of the last things people think about when getting a machine, but failure to lubricate the belt is a primary reason for mechanical problems. The workings of the treadmill belt and deck aren’t that complicated, but you’ll want to use the right kind of lubricant for your particular treadmill to prevent problems with alignment, or worse, belt replacement.

Treadmill lubricants these days come in two basic forms, silicon or Teflon mixes. Silicon lubricants look and feel more like an oil, while Teflon reminds me of an ointment. Whatever you do, don’t use household oils like baby oil, WD-40, or other petroleum-based substances. The petroleum in those lubricants will break down the material on the belt and cause deterioration. As a rule, I recommend using the lubricant provided by your treadmill’s manufacturer. Most treadmill manufacturers have their own line of product. That said, silicone is silicone and there are a number of great products available online. Your better home treadmill manufacturers recommend silicone over Teflon because it’s pure and clean. The silicone lubricants can also be used for other household fixes.
