Treadmill Belt Lubricants: Where to Get Them and What to Look For

Just like your car, a treadmill belt requires regular lubrication. It’s one of the last things people think about when getting a machine, but failure to lubricate the belt is a primary reason for mechanical problems. The workings of the treadmill belt and deck aren’t that complicated, but you’ll want to use the right kind of lubricant for your particular treadmill to prevent problems with alignment, or worse, belt replacement.

Treadmill lubricants these days come in two basic forms, silicon or Teflon mixes. Silicon lubricants look and feel more like an oil, while Teflon reminds me of an ointment. Whatever you do, don’t use household oils like baby oil, WD-40, or other petroleum-based substances. The petroleum in those lubricants will break down the material on the belt and cause deterioration. As a rule, I recommend using the lubricant provided by your treadmill’s manufacturer. Most treadmill manufacturers have their own line of product. That said, silicone is silicone and there are a number of great products available online. How to Choose a Treadmill Belt Lubricant

As you’ll notice above, the best treadmill lubricants are 100% silicone and lack contaminants, odors, and any dangerous toxins which might hurt pets and children. With 100% silicone, you’re also able to use this lubricant on just about anything in need of lubrication. I also favor larger containers at good prices, and if you check you’ll see these qualify. Each also has an easy-to-use applicator to make life easy, with the exception of the more tradition spray bottle, and some might just favor that.

If you’ve purchased a treadmill already and are searching for lubricants, I’d advise first checking with the manufacturer to see if they have a proprietary brand. But if that option is too pricey, or perhaps unavailable, it can’t hurt to shop online and grab one of these 100% silicone lubes.
